When I started my private practice, I did not think I would venture into pornography counseling. However, I started working with young women who came to me with a history of childhood sexual abuse and now wanted help with pornography and masturbation addiction. This then led me to working with women whose husbands, fiances, or boyfriends were addicted to porn and their addictions were negatively affecting their relationships. Finally, I started working with men who were addicted to pornography. Throughout my studies into porn addiction and recovery, I discovered that often trauma was at the root of the addiction and I had to deal with both the trauma and the addiction. This work has been some of my most rewarding.
I use several books to help clients understand porn addiction with the Skinner book “Treating Pornography Addiction” as my go-to and favorite resource. This book was written for the end-user, not the clinician.
I also refer out when intensive treatment is needed. I recently received information on this program – Boulder Recovery – a Christian faith-based program for men trying to recover and heal from pornography addiction. They do 14-day intensives. Check out their website here. https://boulderrecovery.com
Please reach out to me if you’d like to talk more about this addiction. If I am not able to see you, I can refer you to other great clinicians who can help you.
